We strongly urge you to use a surge suppressor on both the power
and data lines connecting to your equipment. We have seen numerous cases
where static discharge from a data line damaged a router or computer network
card. In most of these cases, a simple surge protector would prevent the
damage. Most surge equipment also includes 'insurance' to pay for damage
that is not prevented by the surge protector.
The Ethernet cable from your power injector (little white box)
or wall outlet, should connect to your UPS/Surge Protector and a second cable
should connect from the UPS/Surge Protector to your computer or router.
Please see the UPS/Surge Protector documentation to be sure your equipment is
connected to the correct port on the UPS/Surge Protector. Your equipment
must be connected to the "protected" side.
Virtually any Surge Protector or UPS unit with a Network
Data/R45/Ethernet Port is suitable. Units are generally available at
computer and office supply stores. Here are a few of the available units.
